Louie Bennett: Her Life and Times
Title
Louie Bennett: Her Life and Times
Description
For close on half-a-century, Louie Bennett devoted herself to raising the living standards of and status of Irish women workers. A cultured woman, with a fine mind and a high sense of justice, she won the affection of the workers she served so well and the enduring respect of the employers with whom her activities brought her into contact.
She had wide interests- she was a champion of world peace, and in the anti- conscription campaign she showed tenacity and courage- but one dominant interest. Everything else in her life was subsidiary to her fight for the women workers.
Always a keen observer, she remembered much of the Dublin of her own high-spirited youth, with its rigid social divisions between the trading families, the professions, and the gentry. Later she was to know such men as James Connolly, Jim Larkin, and Francis Sheehy-Skeffington, and though not primarily a politician, her contemporary judgements are both original and informative.
