The Last decade has seen a remarkable change in the balance of power in Industrial relations throughout most European countries after the period of industrial militancy and Union strength during the 1970s. A widespread political shift to the right, high unemployment, and a restructuring of the labour force have all contributed to a change in the context and content of management and workforce relations. Among the significant developments has been a new insistence on the part of employers for flexibility in the deployment of labour.

How fundamentally have these changes altered patterns of industrial relations? Have the unions been substantially weakened? Have they developed counter strategies? How common is this experience across the European community? In assessing these questions, the contributors to this book offer a coordinated and comprehensive analysis of the current state of industrial relations in countries of western Europe.
