British Trade Unions, 1875-1933
Title
British Trade Unions, 1875-1933
Description
This study surveys the development of British trade unionism during the period of its transformation from a narrowly based, craft centered movement to a mass movement embracing all grade of workers, regardless of skills or training.
Dr Lovell examines the difficulties experienced by the unions in the period of 1875- 88, and in particular their failure to extend organization to the mass of the Wage earners. The influence of socialism upon the “new unions” is considered, and its general impact on the movement in the long run. It is suggested that this impact has been exaggerated, and the point is also made that the breakthrough into the mass organization did not really come until after 1910.
