White Collar Workers, Trade Unions, and Class
Title
White Collar Workers, Trade Unions, and Class
Description
Recent years have seen the emergence of what is variously referred to as ‘the new working class’ or even ‘the new middle class’. This new class is largely centered on the ever-increasing number of technical, supervisory and lower managerial workers or ‘white collar workers’. This book presents an authoritative study of the white-collar workers' relationship with their unions and analysis of their newly designated class. The authors have drawn extensively on original fieldwork and verbatim accounts from technical workers and foremen in industry. The book examines the particular circumstances of different groups of workers and their functions in relation to capital and labour, how they affect their class location and the shop floor strategies to which they resort. It analyses changes in the composition of union membership and the effect of these changes on the structure and policy of unions.
